In some cases the lower cortex has cells of different shape or size than the medulla (Fig. 1). But in other cases (Heppia lutosa, Peltula obscurans var. obscurans, and P. placodizans) the cells are the same as in the cellular medulla. However, in Heppia lutosa (Ach.) Nyl. the thallus is ecorticate and the hyphal pattern is reticulate (Henssen 1994).
